Jorge Y. Coppin-Massanet

Earth & Atmospheric Sciences

Overview

Jorge Coppin-Massanet is a Ph.D. student in the Departments of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Astronomy and a member of the Planetary Habitability and Technology Lab. His research focuses on developing and testing scientific instrumentation for detecting biosignatures and assessing habitability in extreme environment analogs relevant to solar system exploration.

Jorge received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico in 2023, where he developed instrumentation for sounding rocket payloads to study high altitude microbial ecosystems analogous to the Martian atmosphere. At Cornell, he leads the development of the Submersible Under-Ice Mass Spectrometer (SUIMS), an instrument designed to measure dissolved gases beneath sea ice in Greenland and the Arctic.

Outside of research, Jorge enjoys film photography, cinema, gaming, and spending time with his dog, Europa.
